Promax Lean Protein Bars
By | 3rd February 2016, 10:03 amProtein bars are a popular high protein snack, perfect for on-the-go consumption. If you're susceptible to cravings for something sweet like a chocolate bar, a chocolate protein bar is often the ideal solution.
This is MaxiNutrition's Promax Lean protein bar and the following review is specifically on the Dark Chocolate Orange flavour.
Taste
MaxiNutrition Promx Lean bars are a your typical protein bar texture, as since cramming 23g of protein per 60g protein bar serving, the texture is rather chewy. We actually quite like the chewy texture that comes with the high protein content, but we do see some bars getting flack for being a 'jaw breaker'.
Formerly Maximuscle, Maxinutrition have delivered a really nice Dark Chocolate Orange flavour in the Promax Lean bar, and rather resembles a similar taste to that of the popular Terry's Chocolate Orange, which is most likely what they're aiming for here. Also available in Dark Chocolate Mint and Dark Chocolate.
Nutrition
MaxiNutrition have packed in 23g of protein into the 60g protein bar, the protein blend sources being Whey Protein Concentrate, Milk Protein Isolate and Collagen Hydrolysate. You've most likely heard of Whey Protein and Milk Protein, but Collagen Hydrolysate is less commonly found in sports nutrition products, aside from protein bars. Essentially it's a form of gelatine that's high in the amino acid Glycine, and subsequently has some great health benefits, supporting hair, skin and nail growth, good for joints and ligaments, aids digestion and has been reported to help reduce cellulite.
Maxi have also added a number of diet ingredients to compliment a fat loss diet, which are as follows:
- Green Tea Extract. Naturally containing caffeine, green tea is a powerful antioxidant called catechins, the most important of these EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), a substance that can speed up metabolism.
- Caffeine. This stimulant can aid weight loss by supporting the increase of lipolysis (the breakdown of fat), increasing thermogenesis (raising your metabolism) and also decreasing your perceived feeling of exertion (allowing you to train for longer with getting tired). Each bar contains a total of 125mg caffeine.
- L-Carnitine. This is a non-stimulant based weight loss ingredient which improves they way that the body uses fat as an energy source.
- Vitamin B5. A major function of Vit B5 is releasing energy from fats by breaking down fat and burning carbohydrates for energy.
Each Promax Lean protein bar contains ~11g of sugar, so do bare this mind and don't over indulge thinking they're an amazing low sugar, high protein snack!
Timing
Protein bars are a great go-to protein snack for when hunger strikes outside of your normal meal times i.e. in-between meals. They could be used as a meal replacement, for breakfast as an example if you're rushing out the house in the morning, however they only yield 206kcal per serving, so you may be left wanting more or reaching for a second one in a couple of hours time.
Because of the sugar content, they would make for a decent post-workout recovery bar, however won't be absorbed into the system as quickly as a whey protein shake.
The Dark Chocolate Orange Maxinutrition Promax Lean bar is a nice tasting high protein treat. We see most protein bars as treats, as nutritionally they aren't perfect, mostly down to the sugar content and E numbers used to prolong shelf life. They are fantastic for convenience, so if you know you're going to be out and about, take one of these protein bars with you as a quick, easy and tasty protein source that will fill a gap, and cure a sweet craving!
